RECENT DE BEERS NEWS:
De Beers loses a pretty massive lawsuit, 295 million they must pay in damages to diamond buyers who dealt with the giant diamond supplier since 1994. They were accused of price fixing through manipulating market conditions to keep diamond prices up. De Beers of course had denied the allegations, but it was not enough to convince the deciding jury of their peers. Read the full article here.
A more in depth review I just finished compiling on De Beers…
Prior to the mid 1800′s, way before Debeers engagement rings existed, Brazil and India were the only ones in the entire world that mined and produced diamonds. The precious stones were far and few in between which made them more rare in those days. In the mid to late 1800′s, diamonds were discovered in the Southern parts of Africa which completely changed the diamond game forever. A huge supply of diamonds came into the market as they became more readily available. The thing that didn’t change though, as we will see, is that marketers of diamonds kept pushing the idea that diamonds were still extremely rare.
Very much like the very famous California gold rush, South Africa was now the center of attention for the diamond rush. Those who would become local miners of diamonds would band together and inter-depend on one another for resources. As they groups and areas developed, interest began to grow fast and committees were created to settle disputes amongst the groups. Claims were then starting to be given out on a per region basis. Those who held claims started banding together to form larger groups, these groups would collectively gather the necessary equipment to keep the mining production constantly moving.
A Firm Decision To Take Over The Company
A smart business person in that time was Cecil Rhodes. He had come to the area and was renting out pumps and equipment to those in the mining sector. As his income grew, Cecil began buying up claims so fast the he eventually decided to form a larger company which would manage and oversee quite a few mining operations in the area. And so, De Beers Mining Company was formed. That was in the year 1880.
Only 7 years after that, the entire accumulation of diamond mines in South Africa were completely owned by this one company. Working through a tightly knit network of contacts in Kimberley, Cecil Rhodes orchestrated all of the moves and continued to be able to fetch premium amounts for all stones that the mines were producing.
Enter Ernest Oppenheimer, a German Jewish business mind and entrepreneur. Over the next few decades he would forge his way into the gold and diamond sector of South Africa. For a long time, Ernest would attempt continuously to get on the board of De Beers, but he was continually denied access by other board members who wanted nothing to do with it. Being a smart and savvy businessman, he commenced buying up chunks of De Beers shares whenever they were available and being sold. There he was first in line to snatch those shares up. He and another investor eventually become major shareholders in the company, until in nineteen hundred and twenty six, Oppenheimer gained complete ownership of the company in its entirety.
Shortly thereafter, he went to shape and give birth to The Diamond Corporation which would go on to produce and sell the goods across the globe.
Though diamonds started to surface in other areas of the world, like Russia and Australia, De Beers was able to keep control or monopoly of the entire line of distribution. The Central Selling Organization was De Beers ace in the whole which streamlined such an effective diamond sales vehicle, that they still made money on all diamond sales which weren’t even from their own mines.
Fast forward to the last few years and now the company even has their own retail stores where they market their very own diamond jewelry line.
Enter Debeers engagement rings…
When a lady is engaged to be wed, she receives an engagement ring from her significant other. Many opt for a De Beers engagement ring because of their high quality diamonds. Though it is customary mostly in North American cultures for the female to receive a ring, in other cultures, even men receive a ring for engagement purposes. In the United Kingdom, North America, Ireland and a few other, the ring is traditionally worn by women however. So when the man decides to take the plunge to one knee to propose marriage, she is the lucky one who is hopefully getting something nice.
The diamond is still the most commonly used stone for these rings. Today, so many styles are available, you can sit and literally spend a whole day looking at different designs and not come across the same ring twice. Debeers engagement rings does not showcase a massive mind boggling inventory online. Rather, they focus on a few proven styles, and some really unique and trendy designs.
The master marketing genius of the company was able to put together a campaign which made people ‘feel’ they had to devote the infamous ’2 months salary’ for one of these babies. Though today, not much thought is given to that pitch, some stores still pitch it religiously. Buyers, in my opinion, should strictly look at and buy what they can truly afford though.
So browse the Debeers engagement rings, enjoy the styles that are available, and if you have any questions or if you need any help buying any of these let me know. I am here to help.
